Pillow protectors are the least glamorous and most cost-effective item in bedding. A pillow spends eight hours a night absorbing skin oils, sweat, hair product and dust — and while pillowcases catch some of it, plenty soaks through to the pillow itself, which is why pillows yellow, harbor allergens and wear out early. A zippered protector intercepts all of that, and this set covers all four pillows of a queen bed at once.

These protectors are made of soft, breathable cotton rather than the crackly polyester or vinyl found on bargain covers. The difference is immediately audible and tangible: no rustle when you turn over, no clammy barrier under the case, just a quiet second skin over the pillow. Air moves through the weave freely, so the pillow’s own breathability — one of the main virtues of the collection’s gel-fiber fill — is preserved.

The full-length zipper closure is what separates a protector from a mere second pillowcase. Fully enclosed on all six sides, the pillow is sealed against dust mites, shed skin and spills; wash day means unzipping four covers and throwing them in with the sheets, a job of thirty seconds. The pillow underneath stays factory-fresh for years.

The set of four is deliberately sized to a whole bed. Protecting only the sleeping pillows while the back-row pillows yellow makes little sense; at this price, every pillow gets covered, including the ones in the guest room rotation.
